- This article is about the incarnation in the TV series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated. For other incarnations, see Crystal Cove (disambiguation).
Crystal Cove is a town along the United States Pacific coast where Fred Jones, Jr., Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Shaggy Rogers, and Scooby-Doo live. Known as the " most hauntedest place on earth," residents believed the town is cursed, having a long history of paranormal activity and legendary monsters. These mysteries and the resulting hysteria fuelled Crystal Cove's local economy through tourism. Residents, including former Fred Jones, Sr. and Sheriff Bronson Stone, constantly looked to capitalize on every possible unexplained phenomenon rather than investigate the monster attacks, even when such mysteries commonly turn out to be fronts for criminal activity.
Crystal Cove's unusually high levels of crime, apparent supernatural phenomena, and corruption stemmed from an evil Annunaki buried deep under Crystal Cove, the town's famed treasure but also the source of the town's curse and all its evil. While the conquistadors who brought it there intended for it never to be found, many conflicting powers across several centuries sought to find it, being drawn to the treasure by the Evil Entity's corrupting influence. As such, when the Evil Entity was destroyed, Crystal Cove assumed an entirely new identity, dubbed the "sunniest place on Earth" free of corruption and evil.
History[]
Early history[]
Crystal Cove was founded by a group of conquistadors led by Fernando El Aguirre and was named after the crystal sarcophagus they founded the settlement to hide. While they got it from the Mayans thinking it was treasure, it contained the most evil Annunaki, the Evil Entity. Knowing the Evil Entity's corrupting influence, they buried it deep underground, and the mystical Planispheric Disk which was used to hide the entity in another dimension, was broken into six parts to ensure the entity was never freed. El Aguirre hid his piece in his galleon, which he placed atop Mount Diabla and rigged with booby traps to ensure it would never be found. However, the Evil Entity still had enough power to influence the city's inhabitants above the bay, influencing them to commit various crimes and search for the pieces, hoping that one of them would find the cursed treasure and free it from its sarcophagus. This resulted in the "paranormal activity" that plagued them, an unusually-high number of criminals posing as monsters.[1]
By the mid-1500s, Crystal Cove had become a missionary settlement, and one group of friars, the Fraternitas Mysterium was among the first of the groups of five corrupted by the Evil Entity. When they arrived at the coast, they met one of El Aguirre's conquistadors and found two pieces of the Planispheric Disk. However, the pieces corrupted the donkey mascot, Porto, into destroying the town, planting explosives, taking one piece, and fleeing to modern-day Gatorsburg. By the time the leader of the Fraternitas Mysterium, Gabriello Serra, retrieved the piece, the explosives had detonated, creating a massive fault and causing the entire settlement to sink into the ocean, taking one of the pieces with it. Serra hid his piece in a wheel of cheese. Despite Serra and Porto's tarnished legacy, they were falsely taught centuries later as heroes who saved the townspeople from an earthquake that sent the town into the sea.[2]
Crystal Cove in the Old West.
By the era of the American West, Crystal Cove had been rebuilt, but had become a lawless town filled with thieves and other criminals. However, gunslinger Will Williamson began enforcing the law in the town, bringing several criminals to justice. He became the sheriff of police and was nicknamed Dead Justice, but ultimately died while arresting robber Nitro Wisinski when they both dove into an active volcano.[3]
According to the seal of Crystal Cove on Evallo von Meanskrieg's work permit, Crystal Cove became a county in 1825.[4]
In the 1880s, Abigail Gluck of the Benevolent Lodge of Mystery (based in the Burlington Library outside of Crystal Cove) built a secret robot factory near the underwater ruins of the old Crystal Cove. There, she built Kriegstaffebots to help her find the pieces of the Planispheric Disk. However, she was unsuccessful and the factory became abandoned after her death.[5]
The Darrow Mansion before its sinking.
Seventy-five years before the modern era, the Evil Entity corrupted another group, the Darrow Family, who also called themselves the Mystery Fellowship. They found one of the pieces, but due to the Evil Entity's corruption they fought each other over it. On one Halloween night, the Darrow Mansion's foundation collapsed and the mansion sank, trapping both the family and the piece underground. The family members survived the sinking and lived the rest of their lives underground, but were never found and Darrow University was built on the land where the mansion once stood.[6]
The next group to be influenced was Crystal Cove High School's mystery-solving club, Mystery Incorporated. They searched for the piece with Darrow University student Fred Jones, venturing into the Crystal Cove Caves to find a piece. However, Fred Jones posed as the Freak of Crystal Cove and betrayed them with their mascot, Professor Pericles, extorting them into giving them the piece and leaving Crystal Cove. However, Jones then betrayed Pericles, framing him for the disappearance of Mystery Inc. and keeping the piece for himself. Pericles was sentenced to life imprisonment at Crystal Cove's insane asylum for animals.[7]
At some point during this general period, Destroido Corp. rose in Crystal Cove as a multi-industry conglomerate, acquiring brands such as Nature Slivers while also becoming the largest polluter in Crystal Cove. For their disregard for the environment and the people of Crystal Cove, they became a symbol of corporate greed and corruption.[8] Destroido also operated an oil rig off the coast of Crystal Cove in Dead Man's Point, but were forced to abandon it after a report was on its unacceptable environmental impacts.[9] Their CEO, Ed Machine, was actually an agent of Ricky "Mr. E" Owens, one of the original members of Mystery Incorporated.[10]
At another point, Theodore Avocados became the town's mayor but was ultimately arrested after being caught stealing a diamond from the Crystal Cove Bank. The diamond was never found, but his son, George Avocados, insisted his father was innocent.[11]
Fred Jones soon became the mayor of Crystal Cove, a position he used to continue his search for the other five pieces of the Planispheric Disk.[7] However, as mayor, he chose to capitalize on the various monsters terrorizing the town, using them to promote the town's tourism industry. Even when the monsters threatened Crystal Cove's citizens, Jones discouraged the police from investigations, framing the monsters as real to boost Crystal Cove's reputation as a "haunted" town. When his adoptive son, Fred Jones, Jr., formed a new group also called Mystery Incorporated, Jones discouraged them from investigating even as they proved the monsters were humans using costumes to commit crimes.
Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated[]
Season one[]
Against the wishes of Mayor Jones, the new Mystery Inc. investigated various monsters terrorizing Crystal Cove, such as the Slime Mutant[12], Ghost Truck[11], Man-Crab[13], Que Horrifico[14], Ghost Girl[15], phantom[10], gnome[16], Humungonauts (who destroyed several buildings)[17], Fright Hound[18], vampire[19], Char Gar Gothakon[20], Cicada Creature (who terrorized Destroido employees)[8], Wild Brood[21], Aphrodite[22], White and Red Wizards[23], Nightfright[24], Manticore[25], Headless Horror[26], ghost of Dead Justice (who temporarily replaced Sheriff Bronson Stone as police sheriff)[3], and Obliteratrix[27]. During many of these cases, Mr. E gave them guidance, giving them cryptic information to help them solve the cases. Though Mystery Inc. thought Mr. E was a helpful informant, he was really using them, seeking the Planispheric Disk Pieces for himself.
During the investigation of the Ghost Truck, Fred Jones, Sr. ran for re-election against George Avocados, but Avocados lost after Mystery Inc. found proof of Theodore Avocados' guilt, significantly damaging Avocados' reputation.[11] Avocados retired from politics and returned to his family orchard to farm avocados.[28]
Shortly after investigating Char Gar Gothakon on the Darrow University campus[20], Mystery Inc. learned about, found, and ventured into the underground Darrow Mansion, where they found its sole remaining inhabitant, Danny Darrow, and received a disk piece, though they did not know what it was[6]. By that time, Professor Pericles had escaped from the insane asylum (shortly after Mystery Inc. investigated the Fright Hound) and created his plans to find the cursed treasure.[18] He helped Amanda Smythe in her crimes as Aphrodite, placing the entire town under a love trance and allowing him to find various items needed to find the treasure.[22] He then posed as a shadowy figure to terrorize Fred's home, and though he was eventually exposed, he stole Mystery Inc.'s piece and escaped. However, Mystery Inc. learned about the Planispheric Disk from this encounter.[29]
After their long-time ally, Angel Dynamite, was revealed to be a member of the original Mystery Inc., the new Mystery Inc. learned about the Freak of Crystal Cove, setting out to the Crystal Cove Caves to investigate.[27] They eventually exposed Mayor Jones as the Freak of Crystal Cove, placing him under arrest and ending his rule as mayor. This revelation caused Mystery Inc. to disband, and Professor Pericles quietly stole Jones' piece during the encounter.[7]
Season two[]
Pollution of Crystal Cove caused by Destroido Corp.
With Jones sent to prison, Janet Nettles became the next mayor of Crystal Cove, but the town soon faced one of the most dangerous monsters in its history, Crybaby Clown, who significantly damaged the town's tourism industry with its savage acts of terrorism.[30] Furthermore, Destroido had declared corporate sovereignty, becoming completely independent from Crystal Cove's authority and regulation. This allowed them to continue polluting waters with toxic lithium, rendering many areas of Crystal Cove uninhabitable, creating sinkholes and acid geysers, and causing plant and animal species to mutate drastically.[28]
With an anonymous suggestion from Velma Dinkley, Nettles reunited Mystery Incorporated to investigate Crybaby Clown.[30] Mystery Incorporated finally captured the clown while he tried to make an escape by plane, exposing Hollywood actor Baylor Hotner.[31] While investigating a concurrent case, they also found another piece of the Planispheric Disk in the house of Baba Yaga.[32]
Unlike her predecessor, Nettles was more cooperative with Mystery Inc.'s investigations, giving them their very own office in city hall and often assigning them the cases herself. They caught monsters such as the Dreamweaver[33], the Hodag of Horror[34], Junk[35], the Graveyard Ghoul[4], Hebediah Grim (who attacked impurely-dressed teenagers)[36], the Scarebear[28], Dr. Zin's dragon[37], the mummy of Friar Serra[38], aliens[39], zombies of Rude Boy and the Ska-Tastics (who placed most of the town under a dancing plague)[40], the Gluten Demon[41], and the Dandy Highwayman (who abducted women)[42]. During their investigations, they found two more pieces of the Planispheric Disk: Friar Serra's piece after investigating the Hodag[34], and El Aguirre's piece atop Mount Diabla[1].
However, Brad Chiles and Judy Reeves, members of the original Mystery Inc. and Fred Jones, Jr.'s biological parents, returned to Crystal Cove to continue their search of the Planispheric Disk pieces.[33] Pericles united with Mr. E, Chiles, and Reeves[34], but Cassidy, who was allied with the new Mystery Inc., refused to join them[35]. Pericles returned to Abigail Gluck's abandoned factory and resumed its operations, making new Kriegstaffebots to search for the last remaining piece in the underwater ruins. He also sent many of them to try to eliminate Williams, destroying her radio station. By the time the new Mystery Inc. found the factory, Pericles had already found the last piece, so he activated the factory's self-destruct mechanism. Mystery Inc. escaped the collapsing factory but Williams did not, sacrificing her life to ensure their escape. The collapse caused the underwater ruins to fall even deeper underwater into a dark chasm.[5]
With all six pieces found, Pericles' group plotted to steal the new Mystery Inc.'s three pieces as they investigated the Krampus. However, the new Mystery Inc. had actually masterminded the Krampus attacks as a false flag, luring them out as they stole Pericles' three pieces. They had worked with Mayor Nettles, as well as former culprits Mary Anne Gleardan, Fred Jones, Sr., and Marcie "Hot Dog Water" Fleach (as well as the son of a culprit).[43] In response, Pericles released a herd of mutant piranha-cows in order to destroy Crystal Cove so Mystery Inc. would hand over the Planispheric Disk to him. The plan was foiled when Mystery Incorporated redirected the herd into the ocean.[44] However, during Pericles' next plot, Chiles and Reeves posed as Fred and Daphne, acting as impostors to take the Planispheric Disk. This succeeded, and Pericles took the disk from them.[45]
While Mystery Inc. was in the Yucatan Peninsula looking for the Heart of the Jaguar[46], Pericles created artificial earthquakes to abduct the town's residents and bring them to Crystal Cove's underground caverns. There, he enslaved them, forcing them to dig underground and find the gates leading to the cursed treasure. Sheriff Bronson Stone and Mystery Inc. led an uprising against Pericles but the door was opened regardless.[47] Mystery Inc. and Pericles' group then travelled through the various dimensions before finally finding the crystal sarcophagus in the Fire Dimension.[48]
The Evil Entity destroys Crystal Cove.
Pericles freed the Evil Entity from the crystal sarcophagus[48], who possessed Pericles' body and unleashed its army on the town, destroying it and swallowing all its residents[49]. This event aligned with the apocalyptic teachings of Nibiru in Babylonian mythology, in which the alignment of the planets allowed the Evil Entity, an Annunaki, to interact with humans.[42] Chiles and Reeves offered themselves to the Evil Entity while Mr. E tried to resist, but was nevertheless devoured. However, Scooby drove the Heart of the Jaguar into the entity's tomb, destroying the entity.[49]
Post-Nibiru[]
The destruction of the Evil Entity completely erased it from the timeline and changed the entire history of Crystal Cove, with the new Mystery Inc. being the only people in the town with memories from the previous timeline. The negative aspects of the town had become positive in the absence of the Entity's influence across its history. Freed from the curse, every building, company, and past and current resident was completely changed for the better, most notably Destroido becoming the more environmentally-responsible Creationex. Also, all the crimes Mystery Inc. had exposed were erased from existence, and the family members and bullies who mistreated Mystery Inc. were now friendly with them. In the new timeline, Crystal Cove was known as "the sunniest place on Earth," and the town's atmosphere and environment were bright, cheerful, and clean. Due to the changes, there would be no more mysteries to solve or haunted tourism in Crystal Cove.[49]

Monsters[]
List of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated monsters and villains
Notes/trivia[]
- According to early press releases, Mystery Inc. was originally just going to visit Crystal Cove. However, the story was changed so that they grew up in the town.
- In Beware the Beast from Below, Velma clearly stated that Cletus Darrow named the town Crystal Cove after finding gold. However, in Fernando El Aguirre's diary, he wrote that the conquistadors would name the town that way after they buried the evil treasure underneath it.
- A different Crystal Cove appears in Happy Halloween, Scooby-Doo!. Its slogan is also "The Most Hauntedest Place on Earth," and Bill Nye states that the town gets its name from the "stalactite anthodite crystals" in the area's seas caves.
- In the Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? episode The Legend of the Gold Microphone!, a city seal for another Crystal Cove appears on the employee ID of the unnamed librarian who appeared in the episode.
- In Howl of the Fright Hound, Velma's mother tells tourists that Crystal Cove's official scent is formaldehyde.
- Although it is never stated where in the United States Crystal Cove is, it is probably located somewhere in California:
- Miskatonic University (which is in Massachusetts) is said to be all the way on the opposite side of the country from where Crystal Cove is.
- Crystal Cove was founded by Spanish conquistadors, and the Spanish colonized the state of California.
- There is an actual place in California called "Crystal Cove," though it is actually the name of a state park rather than a city.
- In Theater of Doom, Vincent Van Ghoul said the city sank into the Pacific (after an audience member corrected him). This would suggest that Crystal Cove is somewhere on the West Coast.
- In The Creeping Creatures, the family in the opening scene was supposedly on their way to New York City but ended up in Gatorsburg instead. According to a map they had, New York City is 2,000 miles away, which is roughly how far California is from New York.
- In The Wild Brood, the map showing the route of the train that Velma helps the Shadowy Orc re-route places Crystal Cove on its west coast.
- In Heart of Evil, Dynomutt's map depicts Volcano Island to be an island just to the west of Crystal Cove, which is shown to be on the coast.
