The Crybaby Clown was the disguise of Hollywood movie actor Baylor Hotner.

Physical appearance[]

The Crybaby Clown is a hulking clown-baby hybrid monster. He has red eyes with a light-green sclera, as well as a black mask over his eyes, scars across each eye, a red round nose, red large lips, and two large bottom teeth. He wears little clothing, wearing a bib with a yellow-green sad face icon on it, a black strap holding various baby bottles, and a white diaper secured with a safety pin.

Personality[]

The Crybaby Clown describes himself as a "bad clown," and his behavior across all his appearances portray him as one of the most sadistic and dangerous monsters encountered by Mystery Inc. His extensive use of terrorism, often including explosives and innocent victims, was not centered in one particular location, as he committed crimes across all of Crystal Cove. The sheer brutality of his crimes were addressed by the municipal government and singlehandedly affected the town's tourism industry. During each of his appearances, he would arrive speeding on his vehicle, often crashing into buildings, then use baby-themed explosives and kidnap innocent targets. He has a unique laughter, using rhetorical crying and often crying out "waah."

Powers and abilities[]

  • Brute strength: With Hotner being an extremely muscular person, the Crybaby Clown possesses extreme physical strength. He is able to rip an airplane seat off the floor and a door off its hinges with ease.
  • Agility: While preferring to drive on his vehicle, he is just as capable on foot, easily breaking through windows and disappearing from pursuit.

Equipment[]

  • Vehicle: The clown drives a hot rod that is shaped like a baby stroller. This vehicle is capable of driving at high speeds, which allows the clown to appear or disappear quickly. It also comes equipped with a small turret that can fire exploding baby bottles.
  • Baby bottles: One of the clown's signature weapons is an explosive shaped like a baby bottle. These bottles can be thrown by hand, or they can be placed into a launcher in the clown's vehicle. After a set time has passed, the bottles explode, releasing an unidentified coloured gas and creating enough force to destroy an entire car. These bottles can also be used to ignite other explosives such as fireworks.
  • Foam bomb: The clown can set off a different type of baby bottle. This baby bottle, when detonated, releases a coloured foam that restrains the target's movement and petrifies them in place.
  • Diaper bomb: The clown can also set off a diaper bomb, a much larger explosive that needs to be planted before the attack. It is capable of destroying an entire building, but must be manually triggered by a rattle-shaped detonator.
  • Flower bouquet: The clown has a flower bouquet that releases a noxious gas, instantaneously rendering its victims unconscious.
  • Rattle: The clown possesses a smoke bomb shaped like a rattle. While they are incapable of harming victims, they obscure the victim's vision, allowing the clown to appear, kidnap his victims, and disappear.
  • Confetti: The clown has a weapon which releases a confetti-like string, which wrap around its victims.

Baylor Hotner unmasked

Baylor Hotner unmasked.

An unspecified time after the forced disbanding of Mystery Inc, Hollywood actor Baylor Hotner visited Crystal Cove to perfect his character, the Crybaby Clown, for his upcoming film. The Crybaby Clown would commit various acts of terrorism across Crystal Cove, damaging the town's tourism industry. The clown was first seen terrorizing the streets, where he set off an explosion in a fruit store. He escaped the pursuit of Sheriff Bronson Stone, destroying the police officer's car.

In a desperate attempt to stop the Crybaby Clown from further preying on the innocent citizens of Crystal Cove, Janet Nettles, the new mayor, reunited Mystery Inc. to stop the monster. Successfully tracking down each member except for Daphne Blake, they held a town meeting in the city hall to celebrate the group's reunion. However, the clown hijacked the meeting, extorting the town for five million dollars. After this deal was declined, the Crybaby Clown detonated a bomb, destroying the city hall. Later, Mystery Inc. attempted to trap the Crybaby Clown in a doughnut factory. However, Daphne's absence caused the trap to fail, allowing the clown to escape the trap.[1]

Deciding he had mastered his "performance" as the Crybaby Clown, he decided to kidnap an "entourage" to take back to Hollywood, including therapist Dr. Henklefust, hairstylist Gorgeous G, an unnamed plastic surgeon, publicist J. R. Kipple, and girlfriend Daphne Blake, implanting a subcutaneous tracking chip in each and abducting them individually. After gathering his "entourage," he hijacked a plane to fly to Hollywood. However, Mystery Inc. followed the Crybaby Clown's tracks and successfully entered the aircraft as it flew. After a prolonged physical struggle between Fred Jones and the Crybaby Clown, Fred subdued the clown, seized control of the plane and landed it safely back in Crystal Cove. Hotner was subsequently exposed and handed over to authorities.[2]

Post-Nibiru[]

When the Evil Entity was destroyed, it altered all of reality for Crystal Cove, erasing Hotner's crimes as the Crybaby Clown from existence.[3]

Appearances[]

Notes/trivia[]

  • He is the second villain Mystery Incorporated has failed to capture and unmask (the first being the Piranha-Goat), though they caught Crybaby Clown later on.
  • Crybaby Clown's appearance of being insane, plus Baylor's dating Daphne until exposed, is reminiscent of Hobgoblin (Jason Macendale, another voice role of Mark Hamill's) on the 1990s Spider-Man cartoon series, who similarly dated Felicia Hardy (in this version a daughter of wealth like Daphne).
  • Crybaby Clown may also be a reference to, most notably, the DC Animated Universe's Joker (yet another role of Hamill's) as both have similar voice, similar laugh, both are evil clowns, both terrorize a town/city and just as insane.
