Charles "Crunchy" Granville was the owner of the Granville Resorts, a beach resort in Faja Manu.

Physical appearance[]

Granville is a young man with long, blond hair in dreadlocks and a cleft chin. While on his ship, he wears an orange life vest, blue pants, a beach hat and a black necklace with a white bead. However, elsewhere, he wears a brown vest, two brown bracelets with zigzag patterns, and brown sandals.

Personality[]

Granville originally appeared as a stereotypical hipster, posing as an inconspicuous beachcomber and blaming the Motoshondu attacks on "bad karma." Despite his relatively cool-headed demeanour, he prided his boat, the Big Blue Mama, and vowed revenge against Motoshondu when it destroyed his boat. However, he was later exposed as an ecological extremist who wanted to protect underwater ecosystems, turning to crime and attacking humans to do so. Though his motives were noble and selfless, he sank countless ships, terrorizing innocent tourists and leaving shipwrecks on the sea floor. Maura Ravenmane condemned his actions, calling it "dangerous and irresponsible behaviour."

Season one[]

As an ecological extremist, Granville created a monster to scare away tourists and protect the sea turtles in Morakemi Reef. He based the monster on Motoshondu, the island spirit of Faja Manu, said to attack those who threatened the island habitats. As he attacked and destroyed several ships, Granville gave tours on his boat, the Big Blue Mama, which appeared to have a glass bottom but really had a television screen playing a prerecorded video. So, when he gave Mystery Inc. a ride on his boat, he used the screen to fake the Motoshondu attacks, causing him to crash his boat into a rock formation. As the Big Blue Mama sank, Sharky Tazo rescued Mystery Inc. and Granville, taking them into his helicopter.

While investigating the monster attacks, Mystery Inc. investigated Tazo's hut, containing many items from the wreck of the Big Blue Mama. Tazo claimed he salvaged the items from the wreck, but among the goods was Granville's hat, despite Granville wearing it when rescued. So, they suspected Granville returned to the sea after the Motoshondu attack. They then searched Granville's hut, finding a dinghy missing on the wall, which confirmed that Granville went out to sea.

Crunchy Granville exposed

Crunchy is revealed as the culprit behind Motoshondu.

Borrowing Professor Maura Ravenmane's boat, Mystery Inc. travelled out to Morakemi Reef to search for Granville. However, Granville attacked them as Motoshondu, wrecking the boat and forcing them to dive underwater. As he chased them through a shipwreck and followed Shaggy and Scooby back to the surface, however, a very large wave struck Motoshondu, washing him back to the shore of Faja Manu. The submarine was opened and Granville was exposed for his crimes. Despite being an environmentalist like Granville, Ravenmane condemned his actions, calling it "dangerous and irresponsible behaviour."

Notes/trivia[]

  • In contrast to other culprits in the series, who were motivated by greed, revenge, fame or fixing a previous mistake, Crunchy's motives were actually noble, as his main goal was to protect the turtles and their mating grounds. This does however not excuse his actions, especially since they could have endangered other parts of the local fauna beside the turtles, not to mention the people he attacked.
