He was curious on what had been going on, but didn't want to risk getting attacked.

He handed out a message written by Professor Walgrave to the gang, about an urgent message to come investigate a Lion Man haunting a nearby bungalow and scaring people away.
He later showed up after the gang revealed Walgrave was the Lion Man and had been stealing tusks from the elephant graveyard to sell for ivory, the ranger congratulated them for stopping him and said that the tusks could make an exhibit in the museum.
He then asked how he could give a thanks, to which Shaggy replies saying they wanted something tasty to eat.
