His ship, which sank in the year 1764 was recently salvaged from the ocean floor and would be used to start a treasure hunting game as nobody knew where the treasure he stole from various people in the past went to after the wreckage.
A member of the treasure hunting challenge, "Next" Jen DeVice would create a projectional image of his ghost to scare off the other contestants in order to find it first. However, the Riddler was also involved and tried to diverse her, Hampshire Smith and the Gang into a wild goose chase by making up false information that Paddywhack met famous writer Horace Greenly, even though said writer was born 47 years after the incident.
The treasure was later revealed to be hidden in the painting of himself, as it was sealed to the wall to prevent people from easily finding it until they followed his maps.
