Big Scare in the Big Easy is the fourth episode of the first season of What's New, Scooby-Doo?
Premise[]
The gang stay at a housing estate next to a graveyard during their spring break in New Orleans. They soon realize that two Civil War ghosts re-enact a duel every night to scare away guests, and so it's up to Mystery Inc. to uncover the truth about the legend of the Leland Brothers.
Synopsis[]
Ghosts a hundred year feud.
Crawdad Mike and his bus driver lead a tour bus, when the ghosts of Union Jed and Rebel Caleb appear on their tombstones, battling each other before terrorising the tour bus.
The gang is spending spring break in New Orleans and are enjoying the Mardi Gras festivities. They make their way to their hotel through a cemetery, where they are chased by the ghosts of the Leland Brothers. During a tour, Crawdad Mike's bus shows up just in time to get the gang to safety. Crawdad Mike tells the gang that the Leland Brothers fought on opposite sides of the civil war and hated each other so much that they found a duel in the family graveyard, where they both perished. Mike adds that their ghosts continue to fight in the graveyard every night.
Spring break in New Orleans.
Mike drops the gang off at their hotel, the Leland Gables. There, they find the hotel owner, Lorelei Leland, arguing with Cyrus T. Buford, who wants to buy the hotel and the Leland family cemetery to expand the River Gate, his hotel and waterpark. He has been trying to use the "legend" of the Leland ghosts to force Lorelei to sell. The gang tell Lorelei about being chased by the ghost. Lorelei remarks about Scooby's Mardi Gras costume, which was destroyed in the chase before the gang are introduced to Lorelei's towering brother Taylor. Taylor tells the gang not to go into the cemetery, lest they get recruited in the Leland Brothers' "armies of undead". Daphne notices Taylor's muddy shoes and Velma figures he must have in the cemetery himself and questions why this late at night.
Suspicious of Taylor, the gang go looking for clues in the cemetery. Daphne finds one of her shoes covered in some unknown substance and the gang approached Crawdad Mike, who claimed that it is ectoplasm, what ghosts are supposedly made of. Mike offers to give more information on his tour, for only $5 each, but Velma declines.
At dinner, Shaggy discovers the fiery Five Skull Fire Sauce, and the gang spot Lorelei shopping at the voodoo store. Scooby spies Lorelei buying bat wings, chicken bones and the eye of a toad, which Velma remarks sounds like voodoo. On the way to Cyrus Bufford's waterpark, Daphne spots Taylor carrying a Confederate uniform through the graveyard at night.
Men With the hex.
At the waterpark, the gang encountered the ghosts, who chased them all over the waterpark. Finally losing the ghost, the gang encounter Cyrus Bufford, who tell them the ghost scared off all his staff, forcing it to stay closed. The gang then noticed that Daphne was missing, likely taken by the ghosts.
Returning to the Leland family cemetery in search of Daphne, the gang split up. Fred and Velma find a light projector in a treetop set off by pressure on a rock. Shaggy and Scooby hear a loud wail, which Shaggy figured to be a girl's voice and believed to be Daphne. Unable to follow it, Scooby suggested calling Daphne's cell phone. Following the sound of a phone ringing, they found Daphne tied-up and gagged in a mausoleum. As they entered the mausoleum, however, the door closed behind them, trapping them inside.
Shaggy and Scooby rescue Daphne.
Meanwhile, Fred and Velma are building Fred's "full-proof" trap for the ghosts, involving a longwinded method of getting the ghosts into a moss covered pit. Trapped in the dark, Shaggy and Scooby cower but hear Daphne's muffled cries and refocus. Shaggy ungags Daphne, who urges them to hurry. Unable to undo the ropes binding Daphne, Shaggy used Five Skull Fire Sauce to burn them. Daphne got them out of the mausoleum using a dog tag and an eyelash curler to lock-pick the door but the find the ghosts right outside.
Scooby scares the ghosts into a trap.
Running away, Shaggy ran directly into Fred's trap, which, didn't end up working to plan. Scooby, however, scares the ghosts into the pit trap, dressed as a phantom; a new costume Lorelei made for him. Trapped and unable to escape, the culprits were unmasked just as Lorelei and Taylor arrived, wondering what all the commotion was about.
The "ghosts" were revealed to be Crawdad Mike and his driver. They orchestrated the haunting to generate publicity for Mike's tour and they used a hologram projector to scare tourists and dry ice to create the eerie fog, which left a residue that Daphne saw on her shoe. When they realized the gang was getting too close to the truth, they donned disguises as the Leland brothers and tried to scare them away by kidnapping Daphne. Meanwhile, Lorelei had been in the store, searching for a talisman and a mask for Scooby's costume. Taylor was selling a family heirloom uniform to help pay the bills and wanted to keep it a secret from Lorelei.
There are some mystery you just can't solve.
After the mystery was solved, the gang went back to celebrating Mardi Gras. Lorelei and Taylor decided to form an partnership with Cyrus T. Buford, combining their businesses. Daphne thanked Shaggy for saving her, but he playfully suggested she should thank herself for "wailing so hard." Daphne, however, reminded him that she was gagged and could hardly make a sound. To their horror, an eerie, howling wind swept past them. Scooby howled his catchphrase, joining the strange wind.

Notes/trivia[]
- The Mystery Machine is absent in this episode.
- This is the only episode in the What's New incarnation that had Daphne bound and gagged.
- Scooby, Shaggy, Velma, and Fred had gumbo for dinner, while Daphne had salad.
- "Man With the Hex" was also used in the 2002 film.
Miscellaneous[]
- Daphne getting kidnapped: She gets taken by the Ghosts of the Leland Brothers, and is bound, gagged and locked in a mausoleum.
- "Zoinks" count: 4.
- "Ruh-roh" count: 1.
- "Jeepers" count: 1.
- "Jinkies" count: 2.
Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]
- When Crawdad Mike is unmasked, he has a full head of hair, but when the police come to take him and his bus driver away, he's half-bald.
Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]
- Either Rattletrap Tours (the name on the bus) is an extension of Haunted New Orleans Tours (the name on the sign outside the building where the bus is parked), or there was a mix-up.
- Crawdad Mike addresses Velma as the masculine mon petit, rather than the feminine ma petite.
- Velma says to Fred that Jed was much taller than Caleb, but it was actually Caleb who was taller.
- After the chase scene, when the gang bumps into Cyrus T. Buford, they all gasp. Daphne's voice can clearly be heard even though she is not with the gang, since she has already been kidnapped.
- While explaining the solution, Velma picks up dry ice with her bare hands. This would burn her hand. Gloves are required for handling dry ice.
- Moreover, dry ice doesn't leave residue, since its "fog" is caused by its becoming a gas at room temperature.
- The source of the ghostly howl is never explained.
- It seems out of character for Scooby to happily howl along with the eerie howl he hears at the end of the episode.
- The ghosts are slimmer than Crawdad Mike and his driver.

Quotes[]
Fred: We need to see if Cyrus Beauford is connected to those uncivil Civil War ghosts. Now, let's split up and look for clues. |
Fred: I built a foolproof trap. Anyone coming through here in the dark will trip over those barrels and shoot down the water slide. They'll get instantly caught up by that wire spring. It's attached to that big catapult. When I hear the sproing sound, I pull the trigger, which will catapult the culprit right into your moss-covered pit. Great plan, huh? |
Crawdad Mike: Sacré bleu! I would've gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for y'all meddling kids. |
Daphne: Did I ever thank you guys for saving me? |
