Art of Darkness! is the sixth episode of the second season of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, and the thirty-second overall.

Premise[]

"Junk", a giant art construction made of vehicular parts, turns its victims into gold statues, but with members of the gang pulled into Randy Warsaw's next piece, it's up to Daphne to solve the case.

Synopsis[]

At the Pretenso Gallery an art exhibition is opening. Cassidy Williams tells Brad Chiles and Judy Reeves that they have to talk, but Brad says it's not a good time. Randy Warsaw unveils his latest masterpiece: Junk. The exhibit comes to life, grabs the singer Eeko, swallows her and then collapses, leaving her as a golden statue.

In Mystery Incorporated's office, Velma shows a report on the show's opening to the gang, just as Mayor Nettles arrives with the living work of art. She wants them to solve the mystery.

Mystery Inc. arrive at Arrtwerks and try to blend in. Randy Warsaw breaks Velma's glasses and names her Jinkies, his new muse. He rips off Fred shirt and names him Beef. He puts a wig on Scooby and names him Freako, his emo art-rock band's new lead singer. He makes Shaggy a worker in Randy Warsaw's Arrtwerks. Daphne asks about her, but Warsaw calls her boring and dismisses her. Shaggy talks to his fellow worker, Worker Number One, who says things will change, some day.

Randy Warsaw introduces Velma/Jinkies to his old muse, Clio, who he tells to shoo. Fred and Daphne examine Junk, which comes to life again, attacks Warsaw, grabs Clio and collapses leaving her as a golden statue.

Back in the City Hall basement, Velma, still without her glasses, thinks the two statues reminds her of something.

Cassidy surprises Brad and Judy at home, and asks them to think of Freddie and not about the treasure. They warn her to stay out of their way.

At Arrtwerks, Daphne sees Worker Number One leave and post a package, so she calls Fred, but he's busy being painted on a cow. She follows but is pulled into an alley. Worker Number One admits that whenever he makes a piece for Randy Warsaw, he makes a copy and sells it himself. Junk appears behind him, swallows him and attacks Daphne. Fred and the rest of the gang arrive in the Mystery Machine, pick up Daphne and drive off pursued by Junk. After a chase, Junk breaks up again, leaving another golden statue.

Randy Warsaw refuses to destroy Junk but, at Velma's suggestion, decides to let it consume him. At their office, after looking at the three statues Velma says it looks familiar. Sheriff Stone recognizes the three statues as the painting 1001 Bavarian Nights by Albrecht von Cartofokauf, Seeing the accordions in the picture, Shaggy plays a song by his favorite polka band The Kaiser Wursts which, when slowed down, sounds just like Sunday Around Noonish.

At the Gallery, Scooby/Freako performs with Sunday Around Noonish for the first time, but is interrupted when Junk arrives and attacks Randy Warsaw. Fred's trap stops it and Daphne reveals that the paralysis was caused by a strand of brewers' yeast used only in Bavaria, which allowed them to reverse the effect. The culprit is Butch Firbanks, aka Hans von Shanengruber, who released an album of classical accordion music which reached number one in the Bavarian hit parade. Then Randy Warsaw turned him into a dark band leader playing horrible intellectual music.

Afterwards, Warsaw thanks the gang for their help, then fires them as they no longer interest him. Scooby manages to keeps his wig. As the gang drive away, Cassidy Williams comes on the radio with a new show about the evil that resides in Crystal Cove.

  • In this episode, it is learned that without her glasses, Velma has green eyes.
  • Shaggy was once trapped in a mannequin factory for a month.
  • The closed captions spell the Kaiser Würsts as the "Kaiserwürsts", and Butch Firbanks as "Butch Burbanks".

Cultural references[]

  • The title spoofs Heart of Darkness, a famous novella by Joseph Conrad.
  • Randy Warsaw is a spoof on Andy Warhol. Towards the end, Randy repeatedly says, "I don't get it." In the 1960s, the clichéd response to Warhol's art was "I don't get it."
  • The graffiti was in the style of the famous artist Banksy.
  • Butch Firbanks is modelled after musician Lou Reed, who died a year after the episode had aired.

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • Just as Junk falls apart after capturing Clio, Velma can be seen with her glasses briefly on even though they were crushed by Randy.

  • Velma having green eyes is actually a continuity error since she had removed her glasses in The Creeping Creatures, and they were regular black.
  • In Warsaw's online file, Blackpool is spelt, "Black Pool."
  • Junk is credited as "Junk Golem". Possibly meant as a description of the monster.
  • Mayor Nettles is credited as "Mayor Nettle".
  • In the Sheriff's book of art, “Bavarian” is spelt “Bravarian”.
