A Terrifying Round with a Menacing Metallic Clown is the eighth episode of the third season of What's New, Scooby-Doo?, and the thirty-sixth overall.
Premise[]
Shaggy competes in a mini-golf tournament that is terrorized by a giant metallic clown. In a surprising twist of events, Shaggy, driven by his desire to win the tournament, faces the monster boldly, and it is Velma, with a childhood trauma resurfaced, who ends up frightened by the monster of the day!
Synopsis[]
Ned and Stacy are playing late at Putt Putt Paradise; the latter wants to go home, but the former wants to finish his game. When Ned wins and wants his free game, nothing happens when he kicks the clown-themed golf course and in return, it comes to life, consuming the boy before going after Stacy.
After that, the gang are at a mini golf tournament, where Shaggy is competing against Cougar Forest and Miranda Wright. Daphne, Fred, and Velma are looking around, which bothers Gary, the groundskeeper, who has them assist him in moving a large tarp, revealing the clown game, which causes Velma to freak out and remember a traumatic experience of a crazed clown destroying her encyclopedias on her birthday - this reveals that Velma suffers from a crippling case of coulrophobia (extreme fear/aversion to clowns).
At the golf competition, Shaggy is winning and Miranda is losing. Scooby is scared of the haunted house game.
At a popcorn themed course, the huge robot clown shows up. Shaggy puts a bag of popcorn in its face, attracting a flock of birds, who distract the clown, causing it to run away. Shaggy reveals did it because he's determined to win the game. Then he wants them to "get going" because he doesn't want them to cancel the game. Scooby and Velma are too scared and run off to play hooky.
Shaggy, Fred and Daphne look for clues and Daphne notices that Shaggy is acting funny, even turning down food and wanting the mystery to be solved quickly. Then they eavesdrop on the groundskeeper and the mayor. They find out the mayor is Gary's father and he hates how his son likes mini-golf, and is planning on going a tour of the game.
Then the three heroes sneak into the shed and find an image of Shaggy holding a mini-golf trophy pinned to the wall.
Scooby and Velma are eating cotton candy, when they find Miranda making a machine inside a van. Then, knowing that this would have been the part where they tell the others and look around until they run into the monster, Scooby teaches Velma how to catch a flying pizza with her teeth in a batting cage and the clown shows up. It chases them into the arcade and the rest of the gang hear them and get involved. Shaggy stumbles upon the monster and it leads to a chase scene involving a bounce house, a ball pit, go-karts, and a baseball pitching machine loaded with ice cream.
The gang then pretend to be trees to hide. Shaggy thinks Cougar did it because he hates competition, until they witness Cougar being eaten by the clown. The gang runs from the monster, escaping by bouncing on the plank of a pirate ship themed course and hiding in an Egyptian desert course, before laying down in their tree costumes to cause the clown to trip.
The mayor decides it is best to cancel the tournament, but Shaggy is determined to keep going. The gang (without Velma, who goes off to find the nacho machine) go to a shed where Gary is working on some machinery. Gary reveals he knows Shaggy, but Shaggy doesn't remember him initially.
Gary is angry at Shaggy for beating him at the first international mini golf tournament, where his ball got stuck in the volcano course. Then Shaggy says to set a trap and use Scooby and Velma as bait, which riles Fred, as he's the one who makes the traps. Daphne bribes Scooby with a Scooby Snack and Velma with a CD. Those two drive off in a go kart, Shaggy tries to hit the clown with a golf ball but misses and is eaten by the clown. Seeing her best friend being devoured infuriates Velma, who overcomes her fear and attacks the clown with a golf club, knocking it down, causing it to break. Shaggy emerges from the clown unharmed, though getting eaten freaks him out so much that he reverts to his original personality. Velma decides to unmask the clown revealing the culprit to be the Mayor Smith Snipper. They thought it was his son, but it turns out the dad wanted to "ruin" his son's game and expel any thoughts of pursuing mini golf. The Mayor announces his mistake publicly and reconciles with his son.
Eventually Fred, Velma and Daphne find the three people who got "eaten" were tied up and gagged inside the medieval castle but unharmed.
Miranda reveals her technologically advanced golf club, which causes her shot to fail and fall in a pond. Shaggy finishes the game on a Scooby-themed course, and wins; the fake Scooby responds by saying "Scooby-Dooby-Doo!"

Continuity[]
- Velma mentions how hockey is the best sport when she hears how much Daphne praises golf. This is further referenced in the previous episode, Diamonds Are a Ghoul's Best Friend.
Notes/trivia[]
- In the flashback to Mystery Inc's younger years, the gang looks identical to how they did in this show's predecessor series, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, indicating that the two shows take place in the same continuity.
- Daphne's outfit color was change to her original outfit rather than her pink dress.
- This airdate marks the 59th birthday of star Frank Welker.
- Ned and Stacy share names with the title characters of the newlywed situation comedy Ned & Stacey (1995-1997), starring Thomas Haden Church and Debra Messing.
- Because of Velma's clown "allergy" (phobia) and Shaggy's determination to golf, they effectively switch roles and personalities during this case; Shaggy is the smart, brave, and bold one (qualities also similar to Fred), while Velma is the "scaredy cat" and hungry.
- This is reflected when Shaggy says "Jinkies" and Velma says "Zoinks".
- The Go-Kart that Velma and Scooby are in to attract the Metallic Clown resembles the cars from one of the rides at Thrill Ride Park (WNSD: Roller Ghoster Ride), albeit painted orange.
- Although this episode aired on March 12, 2005, it was actually produced in 2004 according to the end credits.
Miscellaneous[]
- Disguises: Gang as trees.
- Scooby Snacks bribe: 1.
- "Zoinks" count: 2.
- "Jinkies" count: 1.
Cultural references[]
- Cougar Forest is a race-swapped parody of African-American pro golfer Tiger Woods.
Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]
- In Velma's flashback, the upper half of Shaggy's legs, including his lower waist, are missing.
Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]
- Shaggy's suddenly a mini-golf pro.
- In this episode, Velma's afraid of clowns, but in previous adventures she's shown to be fine with them, such as the Ghost Clown (Bedlam in the Big Top) or the Ghost of Zombo in Terror, Thy Name is Zombo. However, this show may be in an alternate universe from those two.
- The outfits worn in Velma's flashback are styled and colored more like those of their adult counterparts rather than the styles and colors worn in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo.
- In cartoon logic, the Menacing Metallic Clown slips on the gang, instead of crushing them to near-death or death.
- Scooby is noted as a well known celebrity at the ending of this episode. As he has his own obstacle course attraction.
- Mayor Smith Snipper is still in office and giving speeches at the end, when he should be in jail for damaging property and kidnapping golfers.
- He does not reveal where the golfers were even though he publicly apologized. Also nobody seemed to know they were inside the castle, even though that course was used throughout the episode.
- Sporting events are typically separated into age groups due to biological differences that would impact playing ability. As a result, a young girl such as Miranda shouldn't be competing against grown men like Shaggy and Cougar. The fact that she was in last place to begin with makes sense due to the biological disadvantage she has.
- Bobo the Clown should've been fired or sued for destroying Velma's property.
- An arcade ride having an eject button would not be feasible.
