A Haunt of a Thousand Voices! is the twenty-fourth episode of season 2 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? and the fiftieth overall.

Premise[]

Daphne is invited to the cliff-side home of voice actor Frank Welker, where Kate Micucci, Matthew Lillard and Grey Griffin are arriving to join him in his recording studio. They are about to record a show about four teenagers and their pet dog. But when four classic monsters arrive the Gang baits their trap by impersonating the voice actors.

Synopsis[]

At his house, in the recording studio, Frank Welker is setting up four microphones, getting prepared for when he and his fellow voice actors would later record. Suddenly, the shadow of the Ghost of Redbeard the Pirate looms over the wall behind Frank, and he sneaks behind him. Redbeard tries to swipe Frank with his hand, but the doorbell rings. Frank goes to the door and opens it, only to see a large package on the floor. He takes it inside, unaware that the Creeper is waiting right outside his house.

The gang are driving up a road on a steep cliff to Frank Welker's house. They're coming to see Daphne's friend (Frank) and Shaggy is incredibly excited, as they'll get to see celebrities from the gang's favorite cartoons. He says that he wonders how they get the voices out of the drawings, and Daphne responds saying that maybe her friend could help explain it to him, since he is a voice actor.

The gang finally arrive at Frank Welker's house. Shaggy and Scooby ring the doorbell, and it makes weird creature sounds. It turns out that it was just Frank Welker doing the impressions of the funny-sounding creatures from his balcony, and he slides down to meet the gang. Frank shakes Scooby's hand, but proceeds to claim that he "needs some oil and jokingly pretends to drip some onto Scooby's hand. Shaggy asks Frank if he could give him a taste of what it's like to voice act in cartoons. Frank tries to explain, saying that he's been in the voice acting business for 50 years. He says that he normally just gets a script for a show and then he looks through it for the characters and he sees some and tries to think of an impression for them. He does multiple of them for the gang.

Matthew Lillard arrives in his white car. Frank says that maybe he could explain what voice acting is. Matthew explains that voice acting is like when you get attacked by a swarm of bees and the floor is lava and does a dramatic performance of it in his car. He ends the explanation saying that it's like that but less violent. Everyone walks inside Frank's house, just as the Ghost of Captain Cutler rises from Frank's fountain.

The gang see a portrait of Redbeard the Pirate on Frank's wall. Frank explains who he is but the gang says that they know. Frank says that he got it when he bought the place in 1969 and knowing that they don't have much time, moves the tour on. Shaggy and Scooby do not move and stare at the painting. Shaggy asks Scooby who would want such a creepy painting in their house, just as the painting itself, slides out of frame, revealing the real Redbeard the Pirate. Scooby accidentally tugs his beard and the pair realize that he is now real, They run away and crash into everyone else, trying to describe their frightening encounter, but the portrait has turned back to normal. Not believing Shaggy and Scooby, Frank tells them to go wait in the booth with everyone else while he fixes the tilted painting. When everyone leaves, the painting opens again and Frank is pulled inside, a hand over his mouth.

The gang arrive at the recording studio, which has the large package placed in it. Daphne realizes that Matt has disappeared. Scooby sniffs the package and suddenly, Kate Micucci pops out, with a ukulele in her hand. She starts playing a song she wrote but notices that the gang weren't who she thought they were, and asks who they are. She realizes that they must be Frank's friends, and talks about how the day will be a big deal as she and her fellow voice actors will be in the recording booth, recording a brand new episode. Kate says that she wanted to celebrate with a little song. She sings some of it, but just then, her phone rings. It's none other than Grey Griffin calling. She called to announce that she will be late to work today as she is stuck in traffic.

Matthew Lillard crashes into the room, and exclaims that the Ghost of Captain Cutler was after him. The ghost enters the room and chases everyone out. They all hide in a closet, losing the ghost. In the closet, Velma notices a chair with rope around it, and says that someone must've been tied up in there. Daphne notices that the ropes have been chewed through.

After they all get out, Charlie the Robot arrives, standing right behind Kate and Matthew. Charlie grabs Kate and carries her while running away. Matthew uses a fire extinguisher to trip Charlie up and catch Kate. Charlie crashes through the next door. Since Frank and Grey aren't at the scene and the voice actors are supposed to be wrapping up in a couple of hours, Matthew and Kate suggest that they could fill in for those two roles. Suddenly, Grey arrives, hoping that she is only a *little* late and hasn't missed anything. Frank Welker arrives with a box of donuts, and explains that he was kidnapped by Redbeard the Pirate and tied up in the closet. He says that the donuts calm his nerves but Shaggy and Scooby are desperate for a piece. Fred says that all of these monsters are hitting a little close to home, and Velma says that maybe they are closer to home than they think.

At the recording booth, the voice actors are about to start, but Grey interrupts to take a group selfie with them. Then, Kate interrupts and says she wats to sing a song she prepared for that very moment. She starts playing the first few chords when they lights go out. When they turn back on, everyone sees that Kate has disappeared. Suddenly, the Creeper appears and grabs Grey, carrying her away. A Scooby-Dooby-Doors scene starts with all four monsters and Kate's song, which is about how much she appreciates her job, acting as chase music.

When the scene ends, Shaggy insists that they must leave, saying that it's just a cartoon. Frank disagrees and says that cartoons are serious business.

At the recording booth, Frank is showing everyone how to do certain voices, for example he uses a trash can to roar into while he does a lion roar. Practicing dog sounds, Frank and Scooby howl together. Velma asks why all of these monsters would want to hurt the actors. They all agree, complimenting each other. They decide to take five and leave.

The gang have set up a net in the recording booth and are sitting at each of their respective actors' seats. They speak into the mics, saying the actors' names and info about them. The monsters arrive and fall right into the trap, getting caught in the net. Driving Frank's plane which has the rope of the next attached to the back, Scooby moves it forward and the monsters in the net are dragged through the house very violently. The gang think they have succeeded until Fred tells Scooby through walkie-talkie to throttle the engine; He completely snaps it off. Uncontrollable, the plane is brought into the air. Suddenly, Charlie the Robot climbs out of his net and climbs up the rope to the plane. He gets into the cockpit and greets a terrified Scooby with a smile and waves. Scooby, relieved, sinks into his seat as they head to landing.

Outside Frank's house, the Ghost of Captain Cutler is revealed to be Grey Griffin; The Ghost of Redbeard is revealed to be Matthew Lillard; The Creeper is revealed to be Kate Micucci; Charlie the Robot is revealed to be Frank Welker himself. Velma knew because she saw that the traffic in the video that Grey sent was going the wrong way. It was clearly a visual effect to throw them off. Frank explains that he wanted to play the role that Kate plays. Kate sad that she wanted to play Grey's. Grey says that she wanted to play Matthew's. Matthew said that he wanted to play Frank's. If they kidnapped each other they could take each other's parts in the recordings. Shaggy says that it was so wrong, and the gang explain that they love the voice actors just the way they are. They realize this and agree to try to finish the recording for one final time.

During the recording, the gang realize that the voice actors' characters sound very much like them. Even the same catchphrases! Frank Welker and Scooby say the line "Scooby Dooby Doo!" before Scooby thanks Frank for everything.

Notes/trivia[]

  • This is the first time the voice actors of Mystery Inc. appear as guests.
    • It is the second Scooby-Doo story overall in which animated versions of the voice actors appear as both a group and the villains of the episode. The first was What's New, Scooby-Doo? episode A Scooby-Doo Valentine.
    • Animated versions of Frank Walker and Grey Delisle appear in both episodes, with Mindy Cohn and the late Casey Kasem being replaced by newer actors in this episode.
  • Fred announces the celebrity guests.
  • The episode was originally expected to first air on 10 April 2021 on Boomerang in Australia. However, it actually premiered on 7 April on Foxtel's Scooby-Doo Pop-up channel. It was shown in an omnibus format (limited opening & closing credits) with Scooby-Doo, Dog Wonder, The Movieland Monsters! and Legend of the Gold Microphone!.
  • Redbeard swiping at Frank Welker in the opening scene is possibly a reference to "Hassle in the Castle" when the phantom swipes at Daphne.
  • Grey is always on her phone while working, which is what she is known to do in real life.
  • This episode was first hinted by Matthew Lillard in October 2020's Happy Halloween, Scooby-Doo! panel.
  • This is the sixth and last episode in the series where the guest star is actually the villain, following:
  • The majority of guest stars to do this have been males, which means that Grey Griffin and Kate Micucci have been the only female guest stars in this series to actually be villains.

Cultural references[]

  • Legendary Warner Brothers voice actor, Mel Blanc, was known as "the man of a thousand voices". A 2008 documentary[1] about him carried this title.
